“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” Matthew 11:28-29
Rest is a comforting pause in life where worries fade away, needs are met, and desires find fulfillment. It’s a time of peace and contentment, a gentle embrace that rejuvenates the soul. Jesus longs to provide this sense of peace and fulfillment to those who may have lost their way or felt disappointed by what they previously found in Him.
The rest that God promises is like a soft, comforting blanket for your soul. That was Jesus’s initial invitation, reaching out to those who are tired and weighed down with life’s burdens.
His desire is to reach out to those hearts, offering them a renewed sense of hope and completeness that perhaps didn’t feel as lasting or whole as they had hoped. It’s natural for believers to question why the sense of peace and rest that comes from God doesn’t seem to stay with us consistently. The simple answer is that they didn’t stay close to Him.
Have you ever taken the time to really think about how Jesus invites us to come to Him, not just once, but twice? It’s like an open invitation to find true peace and calm in our lives. It’s a beautiful promise that speaks to our hearts.
First, Jesus says, “Come unto me, and I will give you rest.” It’s like He’s reaching out to us, right now, to offer comfort and peace. The moment you believe in Him, you receive this immediate gift of love. It’s like a warm embrace that tells you everything is going to be okay.
But then Jesus says something more. He repeats His promise, but this time He’s talking about a deeper kind of rest. It’s not just about that first moment of relief when you come to Him. It’s about staying close to Him and really letting His love become a part of who you are. This is where true peace comes from.
It’s like when you have a dear friend who you know really well. At first, you might feel happy and comfortable with them. But over time, as you grow closer, the connection becomes deeper and more meaningful. You understand each other better, and you feel a unique sense of calm and contentment when you’re together.
Jesus’s invitation is similar to that friendship. He’s offering us not just a moment of comfort but a lifetime of peace. It’s a promise that goes beyond our initial welcome into His arms. It’s about staying near to Him, letting His love fill our hearts, and finding that special kind of rest that only comes from a deep and lasting connection.
What a wonderful thought to consider: a rest that’s always there, always waiting for us, no matter where we are or what we’re going through. It’s a promise that speaks to something deep inside all of us, a need for true peace and comfort that only Jesus can provide. And it’s there for us. All we have to do is accept it, hold onto it, and let it become a part of who we are.
Jesus reiterates his promise, emphasizing a profound and individual sense of peace available to those who remain in his company. He no longer urges individuals to “come to him” but instead encourages them to embrace his teachings and actively learn from him.
In His words, He promises to provide and assures that you shall discover solace for your very being. Peace, the gift He gave you when you first came to Him, will become something you have truly discovered and made your own. It is a deeper and lasting peace that comes from a stronger bond, complete surrender, and greater empathy.”
Have you ever experienced a moment of calmness that vanishes as quickly as it came? The teachings of Jesus may offer insight into this experience.
It might be because you did not realize that complete surrender to Jesus is the key to perfect peace. To truly embrace the path of devotion and become a follower of Him, one must wholeheartedly commit their entire life to Him. This means surrendering to His divine guidance and allowing Him to mold and shape one’s existence according to His will. Embracing His teachings and seeking to learn from Him with sincerity and dedication is crucial.
Without these, it’s impossible to keep the peace that was given when you first came to Christ. The peace is in Christ Himself, not something separate He offers. So, it’s only by having Him that the peace can truly be kept and enjoyed.
New believers often lose their sense of peace because they do not understand that Jesus requires total loyalty and wishes to guide every aspect of their lives. His followers should strive to please Him in all things, big or small. They needed to understand the level of dedication that Jesus required.
Others, who understood the kind of pure life a Christian should lead, made a different mistake: they did not think such a life was achievable. The thought of continually carrying Jesus’ teachings without a moment’s rest seemed too hard. They believed it required effort and goodness that was far outside their reach. The idea of always staying close to Jesus seemed too grand–something they could reach after a life dedicated to holiness and growth, but definitely not a starting point for a beginner.
They did not realize that when Jesus said, “My teachings are light,” He was telling the truth; the teachings bring peace because the moment a soul decides to obey, Jesus Himself gives the strength and joy to do it.
When He said, “Learn from me,” He also emphasized that He is gentle and humble in heart, indicating that His kindness would fulfill all their needs and support them like a mother carrying her weak child. Many believers overlook the significance of this statement.
These individuals fail to comprehend that when He requests them to “stay with me,” He simply seeks their surrender and promises His amazing love will safeguard, provide, and bless them.
As some have strayed due to a lack of total dedication, others failed because they didn’t fully trust. Dedication and faith are the critical parts of the Christian life–giving up everything to Jesus and receiving everything from Jesus. They are intertwined in a single word–surrender. A complete surrender is to obey and trust in equal measures.
With such misconceptions at the start, it’s unsurprising that life as a disciple could have been more joyful and robust. Believers may unintentionally stumble into sin if they are unaware of how much Jesus desires to lead and guide them. Only by staying near Him can one remain on the right path. In other cases, you knew what sin was but did not have the strength to overcome it because you didn’t know or believe how fully Jesus would take care of you.
Either way, it did not take long for the bright joy of your first love for Jesus to fade. Instead of your path shining brighter and brighter towards a perfect day, like a just person’s path, it resembled Israel’s desert wandering–always on the move, never too far, yet always falling short of the promised peace.
Tired soul, tossed around like a thirsty deer for years, come and learn this lesson today: there is a place where safety and victory, peace, and rest, are always guaranteed. We must remember that Jesus’ heart is a welcoming and all-encompassing place always open to you.
Someone said, “Staying with Jesus and constantly learning from Him can be challenging. Sometimes, the effort to achieve this can disturb my peace more than sin or worldly worries.” It is a misunderstanding to think this way, yet we hear it often!
Does a traveler find resting in a house or on a bed tiring? Is it hard work for a child to relax in their mother’s arms? Isn’t it the house that shelters the traveler? Aren’t the mother’s arms what hold and support the child? The same goes for Jesus. To find peace and safety, offer yourself to God and trust His love and faithfulness. You can rest assured that His embrace will keep you secure.
Our hearts struggle to grasp this because the blessing is so big; it’s hard to believe that Christ, the Almighty One, will indeed guide and protect us throughout the day. Yet, this is precisely what He’s promised, and without this, He cannot truly give us peace. As we explore more of His teachings, we realize that His words “Stay with me” and “Learn from me” are not just mere utterances but rather an earnest invitation to follow His path and gain knowledge from His wisdom.
It is His job to keep us close when we offer ourselves to Him. That’s when we’ll dare to throw ourselves into His loving arms and leave our well-being entirely to His care. The real challenge isn’t the teachings but resisting them. Giving ourselves wholeheartedly to Jesus, and acknowledging Him as our Guide and Protector, will help us find and maintain peace.
So, my friend, let’s accept Jesus’ word from this very day. His words, “Take my teachings, and learn from me,” and “Stay with me,” are clear commands. And a command has to be obeyed. A good student doesn’t question the possibilities or outcomes; they follow every instruction, trusting their teacher has planned for everything necessary. The Savior’s responsibilities are the strength and persistence to stay in peace and the blessing of remaining. My responsibility is to obey. His is to provide.
So, today, let’s respond promptly, embrace the instruction, and confidently reply, “Savior, I will stay with You. As You command, I will accept Your teachings; I will start doing what I need to do now and stay with You.”
Whenever we face obstacles, let it motivate us to follow this guidance more closely. If we listen to Jesus’ compassionate voice telling us to “stay with me,” all doubts will disappear. And its significance will become more transparent over time. Staying with Jesus is nothing less than allowing oneself to be led, educated, and guided, hence resting in the embrace of Eternal Love.
This divine peace surpasses all comprehension, shielding our hearts and minds. It offers us power for every challenge, bravery in each conflict, a boon in each adversity, and the delight of eternal life even when death looms.
O, my Savior! If my heart ever fears again, thinking the blessing is too great to hope for or too hard to reach, let me hear Your voice to boost my faith and obedience: “Stay with me”; ” Learn from my teachings and embrace them to find peace within your soul.
