About Me

“Hi, I’m Allen.

I’m a writer, but mostly I’m a husband, father, and grandfather who’s spent decades trying to figure out the ordinary business of life. I live in the same modest house my wife and I bought almost 40 years ago, a time when many couples were just starting out.

About 15 years after I graduated high school, I had a wife, three young kids, and a mortgage. Naturally, I decided the time was ripe to become a college freshman at 32. Three and a half very lean and financially precarious years later, I graduated, and a three-decade teaching career followed.

My writing is a reflection of this experience. I try to find the big lessons hidden in life’s smaller moments, whether it’s the quiet sacrifice of a parent, the absurd comedy of a trip to the grocery store, or the unexpected peace found in the middle of a storm. You’ll find that I don’t take myself too seriously. After all, if a canned ham can teach you a lesson about life, there’s no telling what else you’ll discover.

I hope my stories remind you to look for the joy, the grace, and the humor in your own everyday happenings, and to see God’s fingerprints on your own journey, especially in the parts you never saw coming.

For a look into the story that most shaped my life and writing, I invite you to read “The Spinach Can,” a story about how it took me nearly a lifetime to understand my father’s love and choices.
